In the grand world of blogging and online marketing the term SEO gets bandied about quite a bit and most people have no clue what those three little letters mean, much less what SEO actually is.   This isn’t unusual.  Most buzz words are simply that, something for uniformed people to buzz about.  I want to put this out there for you to better understand.

The best place to start is by explain what SEO does.  it optimizes your site for search engines, both making it easy for them to look at your content and for searchers to access the information on your page. when they see the search engine results results pages or SERPs.  Many bloggers either do nothing in the way of SEO or the rely on fairly useless plugins like the All in One SEO Pack.  This plugin is the worst thing most bloggers can really do as it fills in what should be custom crafted fields with pitiful auto generated crap.

In the end there are things bloggers can do if they are serious about there blog as a long term business opportunity.  First is make good use of keywords in page titles, post titles and page descriptions.  Every blogger should do these things.  Secondly is make sure you are using good tags and meta keywords.  I personally turn all my tags into meta keywords through a script in my blog template.  If it is good enough to tag it with, it is good enough to make it a keyword.  Next is use your categories wisely, and more importantly is to turn the category into part of your permalink.  The next big step is to take out the useless words in your permalink. This makes them shorter and more friendly to search engines, and to make sure you are getting the most bang for your buck on keywords.  Last but not least is your linking strategy.  Posts should be linked to one another internally and where ever possible have an RSS feed for everything.

I know one of your thoughts is it is fine for Brad to bandy about all this advice, but it doesn’t look like he is doing it himself.  Well you have a point, this blog isn’t doing everything I have suggested at the moment.  If you look to some of my newer blogs they started off doing everything right, so I am not just talking out my arse.  It takes time to integrate these features into existing blogs, but I am slowly working on it both from a theme stand point and from the content side and one of these days it will be finished and totally online for everyone to see.

With the downfall of the old economy over the last eight years we have had rise a new breed of business owner, the professional blogger.  We are the voices that used to stand around office water coolers and the break rooms debating anything and everything topical for the day.  Not only have we shed the old workplace or as often the case shed by our old workplace we have become our own media outlet complete with advertisers.

In this four part series I I am going to introduce you to several of those advertising programs that let us survive in this new economy. Today I am going to introduce a product new to me Pepperjam Store Builder from a PepperJam Network who I have been using on some of my sites for a couple of months.  Let me take you through the simple process.

The first step obviously is to get a PepperJam Network Account.  Once activated you select partners based on what will do well on your blog and wait for your partner approval.  After getting approved simply click on the PJN Store Builder Tab of your account and you can begin the store building process.

In posting the previous 53 articles today as part of the Scribefire Challenge I came some realizations about the country as a whole.  Though we seem thoroughly different when we are talked about as red states and blue states and even urban versus rural, we have much more in common than not.  I have been all across the country in my years lived in the east, west, south, north, and the midwest.  In living in all these places I usually noticed what made me different from the people I met there.  Part of that I am sure was trying to hold on to my identity, but part of it I am ashamed to say was often my unconscious disdain for those less intelectual than myself.  Older and wiser I can see that I really missed out by not ebracing what we had in common.

This is a quick list of what I have learned from the local news of the day.  No matter what poltical party you belong to, what state you are in, or if you come from a small town or big city, you are worried about the economy and just want the damned government to fix it rather than worrying about political ideology.  The biggest sport story on any Friday in the fall will be your high school football, whether you live in the US Virgin Islands or Alaska your local football team is important.  A wrong that i tried to right today also holds true, no matter how much better high school girls are doing locally, they never get as much exposure as the boys.  Last but not least we have some fine men and women in this country who should be recognized as such.

My hat is off to you America and look forward to doing another news around the country day a couple of months from now.

For those keeping track in just two and a half hours I have made 32 posts. For those bloggers that haven’t yet seen the light of Scribefire let me tell you about this wonderful Firefox extension.  This little blogging tool allows you to integrate a posting window right into your browser.  Not only is there the convenience of allowing you to post to your blog from anywhere there is the option of allowing you to blog about any page you are on quickly and easily.  Simply highlight the text on the page you want to quote, right click and scroll down to the blog about this page entry and Bam!  it is as simple as that to add a blockquote right to your post.

ScribeFire is an addon for Firefox that allows you to blog right in your browser without leaving the web page you are viewing.

ScribeFire is an extension for the Mozilla Firefox Web Browser that integrates with your browser to let you easily post to your blog: you can drag and drop formatted text from pages you are browsing, take notes, and post to your blog.

You can highlight some text and bring that into your article as a quote with attribution (as I did above), write in WYSIWYG or code view and post in draft or published. You can even tag or submit to several social bookmarking sites.

To show the power of this Firefox extension between now and noon on Sunday October 19, 2008 I am going to make 100 blog posts using Scribefire. If you care to try and duplicate my challenge or just to try out this great blogging tool, download the latest copy of Scribefire and get blogging.

Campbell Brown Rips McCain Camp’s “Sexist” Treatment Of Palin

A prominent female news anchor chastised the McCain campaign Tuesday evening for engaging in sexism and insulting behavior in its attempt to shield Gov. Sarah Palin from members of the press.

In a fiery commentary, Campbell Brown laid into John McCain for casting a “chauvinistic chain” that ran over his running mate. Punctuated by a call to “Free Sarah Palin,” the CNN anchor highlighted the attempt Tuesday by the McCain campaign to ban editorial reporters from covering Palin’s visit with world leaders at the UN, as yet another gender-demeaning move in a campaign

Campbell Brown is completely right. If the McCain camp believes she is more than ideological sound bite candy for hard core republicans then they need to let her be a true candidate. Furthermore if she is truly ready to play with the big boys she should be made to. We can not allow her to have a place of safety when no other candidate has one. Unfortunately she still gets to claim she is every bit as good or better than Joe Biden, but when it comes down to the VP debate, she and the campaign refuse to meet him head on and really debate.

The current theme is Mani Karthik’s of The Daily SEO Blog. I will get it updated with all my stuff here pretty quickly.  Thanks to KC for pointing out the there was something wrong with the Suckerfish pulldown menus when viewing in Internet Explorer. I clean up the code to make it fully css compliant and leave it to Microsuck to find a way to have a conniption fit of standards compliance. In the mean time I want to thank Mani for his great work on this theme and tell any of you who are serious about blogging that today would be a good day to subscribe to his feed if you don’t already get it every day. Mani has a great post up today about being a Social Media Power User . Check it out!

Now that the niceties are made to a nice guy this brings up the actual post.  In a world that is driven more and more by internet software, it becomes more and more clear that standards must start being adhered to.
