The Count So Far
November 1, 2008
On the first of November 2008 I find myself doing another fifty state wrap up. The count so far is not good for what I want to see the day after Halloween. At a quarter of the way through the state here is the count:
Newspapers leading with High School Football Stories: 1
Newspapers leading with High School Sports Stories: 2
Newspapers leading with Halloween Stories: 3
Newspapers leading with Nudity Stories: 2
Halfway done and we find a few more stories about sports and halloween, but the majority of the local news is on either the election or education. I started to question the how many education stories I was seeing until i relaized this week was the start of the second grading period in a lot of school districs.

Indian Police Raid American Ex-Pat:
Police raided the home of an American citizen living in Mumbai and
seized a computer from which an email claiming responsibility for an
attack that killed 45 was reportedly sent.
Homes Destroyed In Yosemite Wildfires:
Hot weather
hampered efforts to contain a fast-moving wildfire near an entrance to
Yosemite National Park that had already destroyed 12 homes and forced
the evacuation of nearly 200 others.
The DOJ Plays CYA:
WASHINGTON (AP) — A new Justice Department report concludes that politics
illegally influenced the hiring of career prosecutors and immigration
judges, and largely lays the blame on top aides to former Attorney
General Alberto Gonzales…. He knew nothing about this because he is as clueless as W!
Miles Driven In May Fell:
This includes the Labor Day Weekend. The high price of gas is finally doing the one bit of good it can cause. We still need to drive less though.

In Today’s News Round Up
Canada to deport U.S. war deserter:
This is after the immigration court told the Federal Court they thought he had made a clear justifiable case to stay. To me this looks like a clear case of some one either kissing ass, or pressure put on Canada by the US.
UN pulls back staff from Darfur:
In Some Respects I can’t say i blame them. What the country needs is an occupying invasion force that won’t put up with any crap. However, the US Military can not be made available at this time do to the purely internal nature of the conflict, the lack of oil, wrong religion, or the fact they are black. Take your pick I am sure todays answer is one of the above.
Americans Twice As Likely To Have Tried Marijuana Than Dutch:
Have we ever stopped to think prohibitions don’t work. Perhaps no child left behind has left out the reasons about the reasons the Eighteenth Amendment didn’t work.
Bush Gives Israel The Go Ahead To Bomb Iran:
This is no big shock. Let’s encourage Israel, the biggest baddest army in the middle east start a war with Iran. Then as such a good friend of Israel we will feel compelled to go to their aid, even if they don’t need it. What a lovely way to sidestep the War Powers Act.
Morning News Round Up! 3-07-08

Terrorism is in the news again today. Yesterday it was a bicycle riding bomber hitting Times Square early in the morning. This is a clear sign of terrorism in my book, the bomb like two others before it weren’t powerful enough to do any sort of real damage, nor were they placed at times when the there were likely to kill people. These explosions were meant to scare, the very definition of terrorism.
Potential terrorism makes its way into the headlines again too, as US military commanders warn al-Qaida may be targeting big US targets to meet recruiting goals and and maintain their street cred. While it would have been nice to get some warning on 9/11 I think we overdo it sometimes with all the reporting. I barely here it anymore. On the other hand I am not sure why al-Qaida feel the need to hit big targets. There goal has always been to instill fear and chaos, but there are much easier ways to scare lots of people than hitting big heavily defended targets. Frankly, I think far more people would be scared and for a longer period of time with far more chaos if they would hit a series of small town targets. Think of what would happen if a dirty bomb went off at your kids grade school spring performance, a biological agent released at a mega-church in the burbs, or a vest bomb filled with shrapnel let loose at a crowded high school dance. These are the kinds of things that scare me.
The UNC Student Body President was found shot to death in the street. Police believe it to be just another random act of senseless violence. If this is random violence, why is it news worthy? In the wake of other school shootings it should be noted, but why is it worth mention in a Yahoo Insider headline? The reason it is big news is she was a pretty blond white girl. While I don’t deny my own attraction to pretty blond white girls, it in no way makes me forget or deem the murders of non-whites as less important. Every time you see this story in the coming days take a moment and think about these statistics. Black and Hispanic women are more likely to be murdered than white women, Asian women are most likely to be the victims of domestic violence, and Native American women who are raped on a reservation by a non-indian almost never have their attack investigated. When you see the picture of pretty blond Eve Carson, take just one moment and think about all the women who are raped, murdered and abused that don’t look like her.
On a side note to this there is a good post from Holly on her blog, Menstrual Poetry, about unreported crimes against women.

On the Election front, McCain clinched the republican nomination, which is no surprise. Hillary and Barack are still slugging it out which is worrisome to me. Too many democrats seem to be holding grudges and if the queer the deal in for us in the fall I don’t care if the are man or woman; black or white; gay or straight; young or old; if they can’t unify and screw the rest of us we need a great big old fashioned lynch mob to take care of the problem. Come on folks there is enough back biting in the party right now to get Marv Albert all hot and bothered. Get with the fucking program and remember what we are really fighting for, a win in November.
