5 Things you need to know about Blogging Successfully.

Since I have gotten serious about blogging in the last few months I have learned a thing or two even if I haven’t been able to apply everything I have learned successfully.1.   Define your blog.  That is know what subjects you are going to blog about.  Brad’s Tiny World for example is news and technology, the latter mostly being about blogging and site management.  The Other Blog is about pop culture and anything I really find interesting.  It is okay to blog outside of your general sphere; it lets your readers get to know you, and probably draws in some of their interests as well.

2. A sound but boring blog theme is much better than a fancy one full of horrible errors.  WordPress has thoroughly tested and rating themes as well as a huge collection of plugins on their site for WordPress.  You will much cooler themes and plugins elsewhere, but there is usually a reason if you can’t find it listed on the WordPress site.

3. Learning something about your blogging software, page layout including, and image editing is very important if you are serious about controlling your blog.  When you run across that really cool theme with some nifty feature, you need to know how to extract it and everything that goes with it.  Secondly, if you plant to make money from your blog you need to learn a lot more about layout.

4. If you want to make money you need to know the score.  Technorati has something like nine million listed blogs, an authority of 1, puts you ahead of half of them.  That is not the only thing you need to worry about, Google PageRank, Alexa Rating, RSS Feeds, and all the popular buzzwords are popular buzzwords because they are important.

5. Network! Network! Network!  The old adage about it being more important who you know than what you know is especially true on the web.  Oh you still need to know what you are talking about , but without Digg, MyBlogLog, Twitter, del.icio.us, Technorati, Furl, Facebook, Reddit, StumbleUpon, and any host of other networking sites your chances of getting noticed quickly are slim to none.
